As a fan of Star Wars, I've been disgusted by the similar way large groups of fans rage at some of the non-white characters in that franchise. In the case of Ariel I'm sure many of them are saying "We're just reacting the way black people would if they made Lando white," but the anger at actors playing brand new characters in other movies suggests otherwise.
Yes I was going to mention Kelly Marie Tran in The Last Jedi, and the Ghostbusters remake with an all-female lead cast. Very similar reactions. Thanks for your comment.
Thank you for the nice piece. I hadn't encountered that argument of Sen's before. I agree that the moral is very deep. A thoroughgoing liberalism requires minding one's own business in a certain sense--not caring too much about other people's choices and ways of life.
